BIO
Imágenes Mentales is a musical band made up of Carlos Plaza Romero, a Venezuelan musician residing in Costa Rica, in charge of the instrumental execution, voices and production of the material in the studio.
In August 2013, Carlos entered the studio to record what would become “Inmensidad”. An EP of six instrumental songs that conceptually narrate the story about the process and the different stages that two human beings go through during the time of a sentimental union and disunity.
"Inmensidad" characterized by its symphonic and electronic atmosphere, takes us on a mental journey as if it were the soundtrack of some of the personal experiences of our lives.
April 6, 2014, the venue, San José-Costa Rica, would become the rebirth of Mental Images as it was from the beginning with the reunion of Isabel Plaza Urrutia on vocals. In this way, what would become our first EP together entitled “Un Solo Ser” was born, made up of three songs that cover the different genres that influence the band.
The first song "Going through the Scenes" shows us the influence that the band has with the electronic, ambient genre and with that atmospheric touch that we try to implement in all our songs. In “Después de la Muerte, la Vida” we wanted to experiment with an unconventional structure, without a characteristic choir, we managed to write a much more rocker song with a set of powerful guitars, synthesizers inspired by the Post Punk / New Wave of The Cure de the eighties and ghostly voices very much in the style of Thom Yorke narrating through their lyrics the reincarnation and rebirth of a human being.
The last song and the promotional single from the EP, which bears the title of the EP, "Un Solo Ser", was the most rewarding experience of our entire musical career, being this the one that exposes the nature of the band, that intrinsic and deep interdependence of its two members who find in the other the part that complements them musically, to the point of becoming a single creative individual. An acoustic theme backed by symphonic power and a set of voices that transmit a feeling of harmony and energy at the same time.
In the month of August the promotional video for the single “Un Solo Ser” was released and during August and September the band performed live in Barcelona – Spain, as well as began recording their next record production entitled “Intensidad”, the which will be released in early 2015.
The single “Escucho Voces” was released on January 22, 2015. This song ranked first in the National Top 10 of Suena CR de Música Claro in Costa Rica for three weeks.
On February 19, 2015, Mental Images debuted on the radio with the single "Escucho Voces" on the 104.7 station, in the 89decibeles Lado B magazine program.
On March 19, 2015 the new album 'Intensity' was released to the public.
For November of the same year they release the single 'See You at Dawn', the first of several singles that will be released in a period of one to two months.
On this occasion Carlos is the only member to participate in the composition and recording of said theme.
On March 7, 2016, Mental Images releases the EP Ayer, Camino, Mañana, Respiro, premiering the video of the song together under the same name as the album.
This video was recorded by people who supported the idea of paying tribute to my dear father Carlos Plaza Salvati and Luis Plaza Ayala. The idea was to show any type of emotions, moments, memories, memories recorded around the world that will remain forever reflected in this project.
Each video clip consisted of being recorded with any personal device, regardless of whether the quality was professional or not.
Between July and September 2016, what would be the album Todo Gira, Nada Queda was recorded, which was released in October of that same year.
The five-track album allows the band to explore different genres. The first single titled Jericho is influenced by the Punk-Rockabilly of Great Britain of the 80s.
In August 2017, Mental Images releases the album Believe, Trust, Release, Love. Composed of 12 songs, it is the band's first full-length. The first single to be released is the song "Corazón Miel", made up entirely of electronic elements and programmed percussion. The second single "Calles de Esperanzas" is inspired by and dedicated to the fight for freedom in Venezuela.
In 2018 the instrumental album 'Melancolia Luna' is published. This album is inspired by the Black Mirror series. Made up of six songs, which take the listener on a sound journey as if they were in an imaginary movie.
On July 30, 2018, the independent single 'Sublime Atardecer' is published. Theme led by synthesizers and harmonic voices taking the listener on a nostalgic journey through time.
El álbum ‘Otro Invierno’ se publica en el año 2019. Sus nueve temas se dividen entre lo instrumental y lírico, el rock pesado y la atmósfera cinematográfica que tanto caracteriza la música de Imágenes Mentales.
2020 arrives and the album '555' with nine songs is published. The album title is marked by the track under the same name. Theme that was taken from a dream that Carlos had in that same year. Waking up from that dream and recording the melodic and lyrical base and then emulating that dream and bringing it to reality, the time that he recorded that clip was 5:55 am.
The vibe and feeling of this album can be described as “screams of the soul” translated into music.
In 2021 two albums are published. The first is another instrumental album 'The Ocean Hugs Us'. With an emotional vibe inspired by the stars, the universe and the energy that surrounds us. Again with a quite cinematic touch.
On July 2 of that same year the album 'Presagios' is published.
This album has a very significant value, because I started writing and recording it in May 2020, when the pandemic was still very recent and we did not know what was going to happen to our course of life.
The songs go through different personal emotional stages and this album has a different sound than all my previous albums. I dared to experiment with different vocal and musical styles that I had not implemented before.
The album is divided into two parts, the first four songs represent a darker and more uncertain tone.
The Sidereal Transmissions theme marks the dividing point between these two sides of the album.
The last four songs mark a much more cheerful and promising tone, although, however, the Eternidad theme, being a very personal and melancholic song, in turn, shows a hopeful melancholy.
October 2022 arrives, Mental Images and Call Me Shadow (Senka Hodžić) present the collaborative album “Breathe In.Breathe Out”, which was written, recorded and produced from October 2021 to July 2022.
The story of the beginning of our musical collaboration is quite interesting. It started when we accidentally started talking on Instagram and realized we share similar musical tastes and influences. The process began to unfold after Carlos provided the structured instrumental musical outline for what would become our first joint single, "Blurrin' the Lines." Senka then provided the lyrics and vocals.
The process was similar to all the other songs. What started as an idea to collaborate on a song, turned into a 10-song album, and made us realize that our musical connection is perfection for us, something that is very difficult to find and, moreover, the fact that we are from different countries and cultures. The writing and recording process was pure magic from start to finish. The entire album is conceptualized as a kind of metaphorical musical breath providing a variety of moods, genres and personal impressions transformed into various themes.
From indie and synthpop influences to ambient, post-grunge and alternative rock, the album evokes the musical nostalgia of the '80s and '90s across contemporary sonic horizons. The feel, concept and texture of the album is very cinematic, like a movie soundtrack.
By bridging an ocean and seven time zones, we have managed to create a unique personal and geographical musical connection between Costa Rica and Bosnia and Herzegovina, proving that miles apart mean nothing when the connection is right.
